Cleaning up Paint Stains
As part of our full-service package, Mike’s Quality Painting always leaves your site—residential or commercial—clean and orderly. We cover surfaces to prevent paint from getting on your floors, carpet and upholstery.
If you’ve taken on a DIY painting project and want to clean up like the pros, here are some tips for removing paint stains:
- For best possible results, clean up paint while it is still wet. Most latex and oil-based paints can be removed from surfaces with a damp cloth and a mild soap and water solution.
- If latex paint has dried, you may be able to salvage your furniture by gently rubbing a small amount of paint thinner on the painted area, using circular motions. Remember to protect your hands with vinyl gloves. And don’t scrub or scrape.
- For oil-based paint stains on carpet, dip a cloth in the solvent suggested on the paint container. Dab the stained area. Don’t soak the carpet—that will damage the backing and padding. Continue to wipe the stain with the solvent-dampened cloth until the stain no longer transfers to the cloth. Sponge the area with a solution of water and liquid carpet shampoo. Follow with just water as a mild rinse. Blot up excess liquid and let dry.
Many of the clean-up methods for paints and stains involve the use of solvents or dry cleaning chemicals. These chemicals can be dangerous to your health and your property if not properly used or stored. If you’re doing the clean-up, always make sure the area is well ventilated. Follow all instructions on the containers for proper use, disposal, storage and clean up (many of these products cannot be washed in a washing machine).
