2nd Annual Paint It Forward Event

Kym and David Thurman set out to create a home where their children could have a place to grow into extraordinary people, and that is exactly what they did! It all began 34 years ago when Kym and David met. Setting aside her own passion for art to raise her kids, Kym dedicated her time to raising the children as the family toured the country while David was in the Air Force. Soon the family landed in Albuquerque and grounded their roots.

Having seven children of their own, the Thurmans decided they could help out just a little bit more, and started giving their hearts and their home to foster children, and adopted children with special needs. With a total of 10 children ranging in ages from 2-29, and still adopting to this day, Marcy Oliver, a friend and board member of N.M. Child First, thought their home could use a little love itself. With many rooms and high ceilings, Kym had always wanted to repaint their home, but felt it was a feat she could not manage on her own. As part of our Paint it Forward program, Mike’s Quality Painting wanted to give back to families that had given so much to their community, and Oliver thought there was no one better to nominate than the Thurmans for this amazing opportunity!

Giving Back to Those Who Give
Mike’s Quality Painting’s second annual Paint It Forward Event donates paint and helping hands to help out in the best way we know how to, through painting! We gathered our team, friends, and Thurman’s neighbors on July 13th, 2019 for a special day of painting, sharing laughs, and giving back to a family who had and continues to do so much for our community. Using the Right Tools Matters

At Mike’s Quality Painting we feel using good quality tools can make a difference. When rolling a wall we recommend you use a good roller frame. We also recommend purchasing a wool roller cover, instead of buying the throw away rollers. It costs more, but well worth it. There is also more time in cleanup for the wool roller, but once you try it you won’t go back. It can take you four times as long to paint a room with the throw away rollers. The throw away rollers can give you inconsistent layers of paint, lap markers, and possibly built-up ridges of paint.

Professional painters don’t use paint trays. What do we use, you ask? Their secret is a 5 gallon bucket with a special screen that hangs over the edge. Here are a few reasons the bucket ans screen work better.

Paint brushes go the same way. A high-quality brush can mean a better-looking job with less effort. Because a good-quality brush holds more evenly, you save time and get the results you want. You can have the best technique, but it won’t work with poor-quality equipment. So, the bottom line is simple – use quality tools to have a quality job. What Comes First-Painting the Walls or Floor Finishing?

As professional painters we get asked this question all the time. The short answer is “it depends”. During residential renovations, the flooring should be replaced first. The reason is fairly simple. Frequently, when flooring is renovated and changed the thickness of the new material is different that what is being replaced. Often-times hard surfaces flooring, such as wood flooring, laminate, or tile, will require the baseboard molding to be removed and reinstalled after the new floor goes down. This means that some repairs will be required before the painting is done. Quality painting contractors should be comfortable working over new flooring, and doing the work in this order will save the client time and money.

During commercial building renovations, the exact opposite applies. Typically we “the painters” remove the vinyl base molding, repair any damage this may cause, then paint the walls. The reason for the difference is that the vinyl base is a prefinished product so the flooring contractor can install them once the floor is laid with no damage to the walls.

Our hiring process at Mike’s Quality Painting

All the positions we have at Mike’s Quality Painting go through an extensive hiring process. The positions we currently have are: apprentice painter, painter, and crew leader, management positions (field supervisor and sales rep).

First step to our process is posting a great ad for the position.

Second step, we contact the applicant and have a phone interview, collect their resume, and invite them to come to our job fair.

If we are hiring for apprentice painters, painters, or crew leaders, we have applicants come to our job fair. We have them fill out an application at the job fair and then we have them run through a skill assessment course, just to see what their skill level is and where to place them in our crews. Lastly we do an interview at the job fair. The key things we look for in a candidate are: a great attitude, being on time, and great customer service skills. Sometimes the actual skills can be taught, but a good attitude and good work ethic can’t be taught. We only want the best for our clients.

Once we choose an applicant we offer them a try out for two weeks to see if they are a good fit for us and them. If after that process it seems to work out they will then be hired for a 90 day probationary period. We will of course have every employee do a drug and background check.

For our management staff we use a recruiter to help us choose the best candidates.

How do our estimators create your estimate?

Painting can be described as more of an art than a science; but estimating a cost for a paint job is really more of a science than an art.

We first come into your home, ask a lot of open questions and listen to your answers to find out exactly what work you want to get done and why. We need to know what the motivating factors are for each potential client we interview to help us create a clear scope of work that accurately fulfills the clients’ needs.

Once we know what you need to have done then we can get busy working to create the written quote. We have great estimating software that we use, which makes the estimating exact and seamless for everyone. Our estimators import measurements into I-pads which convert dimensions into production quantities and rates and quickly gives us all a cost that is accurate and fair for all parties .

The steps we take when entering the estimate are:

Our estimators will then email you your bid right there in person most of the time. The estimate is very detailed showing exactly what we are going to do. We have our contract in the email which again gives very detailed information of our terms and agreement.

Last Tip of The Month-In This Series of Tips

So we have talked about selecting the right color and the importance of getting that right and to always keep the final outcome of your project in mind. The little details up front matter a whole lot at the end.

We have covered the issues of proper priming and when is it advantageous to use primer. Always keep in mind that proper priming can dramatically affect the longevity of the final project.

We discussed what tools do you need and what steps should you follow if you want to tackle painting a room in your house. The final tip from me in this series is how to throw in the Do it yourself towel and hire a professional.

When Hiring a pro you should always remember that you are in control and have lots of options. I recommend considering selecting a contractor like an interview process. (feel free to interview several people for your project)

1. Select some companies that you want to interview. They can be found by referrals from friends, painters you have seen in your neighborhood, online searches, advertisements etc. but be picky about who you invite to interview. Not all contractors are equal.
2. Set up times for the “interview” estimate. This is an important opportunity to evaluate the contractor. Who answers the phone when you call, how quickly can they schedule the estimate, if you leave a message how soon do they respond. Are they concerned about your schedule needs or not. You have to remember that this is a person you will be dealing with potentially through the term of your project.
3. When they arrive for the appointment are they on time, organized from the beginning and pleasant. Remember how long you may need to be dealing with this person.
4. Let the estimator ask you questions about your needs and wants. If they spend the entire interview telling you about themselves then you can rest assured you will be getting that persons idea of the paint job and not your own. Always remember that it is your home and you should be in charge. Don’t give up that authority.
5. Once finished, see how long it takes to get back the estimate. Find out how long it will take to schedule the work and who will be performing the work.
6. With all of that info in hand, evaluate the quotes side by side to compare based on clarity, detail of the scope, paints being used and cost.

Far too often when getting quotes I see people to eager to count all contractors as equal and only evaluate based on price. Remember that the devil lives in the details. If you look objectively for a professional company you should feel assured that the work is done correctly and that you received all that you intended to purchase.

Tip of the week: Where do I start when I’m painting a room in my house?

I am always asked by DIYers where do I start when I’m painting a room in my house.
The sequence should go as follows.
1. Select the colors you want to paint. (Tip #1 if you have been following along)

2. Cover up the items in the room you want to protect completely with plastic, drop cloths, and painters tape.

3. Remove your wall plates, window coverings or any hardware like towel bars that you don’t want paint on.

4. Fill in any cracks at transitions, perform any wall repairs and do any surface cleaning to prepare the surfaces.

5. Start with the ceilings by painting with a brush the corners and around fixtures, then rolling in the large areas.

6. Next you paint the walls using a brush to edge to the ceiling and trim in the room. I am no fan of edging tools or taping off the ceiling or trim. The transitions will be straighter in appearance by using a good quality paint brush. Once edged, roll the large areas with a suitable length roller cover.

7. Finally paint the baseboards, door trims and any trim items in the room with a paint brush.

Painting Tip of the Week: What tools do I need to paint a room in my house?

What tools do I need to paint a room in my house?

People that we do painting for often comment on how much faster our painters work than when the homeowners try to tackle a space on their own because we have the “right tools”.

So what tools should a DIYer be sure to have before they attempt to paint a room?

I always say you must put first things first and consider the masking material and drop cloth covers. We train our painters not to even open the cans of paint until the spaces are covered up so that nothing gets damaged. A few canvas drop cloths, a box of thin plastic and a roll of 2 inch painters masking tape is a must.

You should also have a small tube of acrylic painters caulking and some spackle for small holes and repairs.

Once the room is covered you should be ready with a good quality paint brush and a good roller and cover. Don’t go cheap on the brush or roller. Purdy paint brushes and Wooster rollers are what we like, they cost more but are worth the expense in time savings and quality of application.

Tip of the week: Do I Have to Prime before I Paint?

We get asked this all the time and the short answer is no. That said, sometimes a coat of primer is the difference between success and failure. To adequately answer the question you should start by evaluating a few things.
1. Are you painting inside or outside. Generally exterior painting has a higher likelihood of needing primer to ensure proper adhesion and longevity.
2. Are the surfaces I’m planning to paint in sound condition. If the surfaces are damaged by water, smoke, sun or paint failure the likelihood of needing primer goes up dramatically.
3. Am I planning on a dramatic color change. Often times if you are turning dark walls light or vise versa you will want to consider priming to balance the under tone and promote consistent coverage, however you do want to weigh this out to avoid needless extra work or increased costs for primer if your color change would cover in two even coats. Our general rule is if two coats will cover, we don’t prime.
