How Much Is Too Much? Avoid Over or Under-Buying Paint with These 4 Tips!

There’s a lot more to paint than just its color. From finish to consistency, there are many things to consider when choosing a can of paint, and each is crucial to the execution and overall look of your paint job. One of the most important aspects, however, is the amount of paint you’ll need, as it’s important to buy enough to paint the desired area while also avoiding buying too much and wasting money.

Not quite sure how to figure this out? Not to worry—our Albuquerque painting experts break it down below!

Consider the Color
First, what color are you painting over and what color are you painting over it with? If your chosen color is similar or darker to your existing color, you’ll only need one or two coats of paint. However, if it’s lighter than what is already on the wall, you’ll need at least three or more coats.

Determine the Surface
Next, consider the surface you’re painting and it’s texture. Is it smooth or bumpy? Textured surfaces typically require more paint, and the greater the texture, the more paint you’ll need. Smooth surfaces, however, are the opposite, and will require less paint. Additionally, walls that are not primed will soak up more paint, and will therefore either require a primer first or several layers of paint.

Find Out the Finish
Lastly, think about the finish or your paint. Is it flat, semi-glossy, or glossy? This too will affect the amount of coats you’ll need, as flat paints typically take fewer coats than semi-glossy or glossy. You may also consider asking the retailer to add primer to your paint. This will not only prime and protect but also reduce the number of coats you’ll need.
